Jaco van Heerden obtained his LLB degree in 2006 and obtained his LLM degree in Labour Law in 2007. Whilst studying towards his LLM, he also enrolled in the Law Society night school, and obtained his certificate in practice management from the Law Society of Northern Province. He has done various short courses, as well as a conveyancing course during 2017/2018. He completed is LLM in criminal law and procedure in 2022.

Jaco has handled the criminal defence in various high profile cases. These include financial and environment related prosecutions.

He has attended various matters on behalf of Emfuleni Local Municipality, specifically the Special Bylaw unit and litigation department where he has worked closely with their legal department. He is currently busy with a development called the Elijah Barayi Mega City project. He is attending to the transfer of approximately 12 500 units on behalf of the developer and the Gauteng Department of Housing.
